Reggae Helps the ‘Winter Blues’

When grey skies are keeping you down, listen to some sunshine.

Greetings Superstars!

I’m sitting here listening to the rain in North Carolina—the day is gloomy and grey, making me want to go back to sleep. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the sun-drenched Caribbean, but cloudy days really affect me. The only thing that could wake me up would be the sun bursting through the clouds, but that’s not going to happen today.

Some people would call it the “winter blues.” And there’s only one cure for it that I know of, and that’s listening to music that is positively infused with sunsine.

PSA: There is a type of depression that should be taken seriously called “seasonal affect disorder” (unironically called SAD). Here’s how the National Institute of Mental Health defines the symptoms of SAD:

  • Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood most of the day, nearly every day, for at least 2 weeks

  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism

  • Feelings of irritability, frustration, or restlessness

  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities

  • Decreased energy, fatigue, or feeling slowed down

  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions

  • Changes in sleep or appetite or unplanned weight changes, as well as more serious symptoms. If you think that this describes how you’re feeling, call or text 988 or chat online to connect with a trained crisis counselor.

If all you need is a little dose of good vibes, listen here to this Third World classic, “96º In The Shadethat will make you feel the island heat:

I feel better, how about you?

This week, I hope that you keep the sunshine in your heart and persevere. 🌤️🌈☀️😎
