Greetings Superstars!
We American women suffered a huge loss, so I’m really focused on celebrating powerful, amazing ladies more than ever. Here are five reasons to praise Spice—the Dancehall Queen:
Born Grace Latoya Hamilton in Jamaica, Spice was the first dancehall lady to be nominated for a Grammy award for Best Reggae Album—for her 2021 album, Go Down Deh, according to Grammy.com. So epic!
Spice’s clothing label Graci Noir offers fly leisure wear perfect for comfortable travel (pun intended). It’s affordable and also features curvy shapes, accessories, and kidswear.
“I address many things because if you leave many things, people will believe many things.” —Spice
Spice added elements of country music to her hit, “Round Round,” featuring Busta Rhymes.
Spice has starred on Love and Hip Hop Atlanta since 2017 and addressed colorism in season 8. She released the song, "Black Hypocrisy," in 2018, singing:
I was told I would reach further If the color of my skin was lighter And I was made to feel inferior Cause society say brown girls prettier Mi Love the way mi look Mi Love mi pretty Black skin Respect due to mi strong melanin Proud of my color love the skin that I’m in Bun Racism Demolish Colourism
Spice is a true feminist. In 2018, she founded the Grace Hamilton Women Empowerment Foundation (GHWEF) in Kingston, Jamaica—a nonprofit to support women and girls in their educational and entrepreneurial endeavors.
What a Queen, indeed!
This week, I hope that you recognize and celebrate amazing women in your life.
